No need for Slapstick Saturday or did you already visit the programme in the afternoon? Then come to the Japanese experimental horror film A Page of Madness!
An ex-sailor works as a janitor in an asylum to be near his wife, who is a patient there. When their daughter announces her marriage, she is shocked by her mother's condition and blames her father for it. Slowly, the boundaries between dream and reality begin to blur.
This critically acclaimed film is produced by a group of artists known as Shinkankak-ha (School of New Perceptions). It was made as a counterreaction to the genre of naturalism, a genre that pursues a very realistic and natural way of storytelling.
The film features an introduction by Lowen Steerneman (26), recently graduated from Leiden University as a translator and Japanologist. Both language and cinema are close to his heart: Lowen enjoys dealing with Japanese (popular) media. Since 2021, that has been a programmer at the Camera Japan film festival.
